A Message from a Professor |
I am very honored to send my message to the high school students in Japan. First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Mohammad Reza Asharif. I came from Iran, Tehran. I've graduated B.Sc. and M.Sc. from University of Tehran (the top rank university in Iran), then I came to the University of Tokyo. I got my Ph.D. from University of Tokyo in March 1981 when I was only 29 years old. I worked in different jobs. I was a Senior Researcher at Fujitsu Lab. Co. Kawasaki, I was an assistant Professor at University of Tehran, and since 1997, I'm a full Professor at the University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan. My major field of study and research is Digital Signal Processing having basic study in Electrical & Electronics Engineering. I have worked on TV Ghost Canceling, Acoustic Echo & Noise Canceling, Digital Image & Speech Processing and also have a hand on Digital Communications. I have more than 240 published Papers & International and National Conferences Proceedings and some patents.
In the age of Information Technology, human society expects to have new technology in daily life. From new computers to networks, from new media of communications to new ways of broadcasting, new information about our life and livelihoods could be grasped in this new age. It was about hundred years ago when airplanes appeared to provide narrow services in military, now they are connecting continentals. Cars came as tools that everybody in each society really needed. Other transportation facilities and equipments are introduced during 20 century, which we called as "Century of Industrialization". Many factories started to make instruments for our everyday utilization. This was in a sense of revolution from the past century. Gradually, human society began to confront energy scarcity, polluting the environment at the same time. This was the breaking & braking point for progression in industry which happened all around the world. Then, new era, twenty first century which was called "Information Technology" has come. People placed much importance on technology relating to informatics rather than wasteful synergetic industries. Research fields attracted much attention that makes everything smaller and compact in order not to make extra use of limited sources and resources. In this new domain of researches, "Algorithm" that is the way for computations are very valuable. You can store multiples of Mega or even Giga of data on a small memory chip; while several hundreds or thousands of pages of books were needed to keep this data in the past. So, you can easily imagine now how much this field of Information Technology could save and improve the environment of human beings. You need more clear data, better quality of Voice, Video & Music equipments, more sophisticated and cheaper communication devices in both daily and emergency situations, more intelligent machines (cars, robots, planes) to make less noise and pollution as well as to be more safe in case emergency arises. At last, ITC could compete with and win over human beings not only by having larger memory/speed of signal (data) processing ability but by having cognitive power like human beings or even better. This is new era of IT, heralding new century. So, researches in this field showed its importance already at the beginning of the century. "WHO CAN IMAGINE HOW OUR LIFE WILL LOOK LIKE IN 50 YEARS". Human beings have acquired amazing knowledge and have accomplished amazing progress only in past decade years in 21century. How do you keep it continuing?
